Do you feel time slipping through your fingers?

As a mom of two teenage boys, I feel this keenly each time I pause and notice how quickly they’ve grown up! I am so grateful for the countless photo albums we have from when they were young, as they help capture those special and fleeting moments. Photography is the ultimate memory keeper!

Leave a legacy

In today’s modern world, many of our pictures are taken on our devices, with a few shared on social media or texted to Grandma and Grandpa. While this is convenient, there is less and less physical evidence of our families anymore. As a Mom and passionate photographer, I want to stop this trend in its tracks! Let’s go back to printing our personal photos – even the ones with kiddos refusing to smile and less-than-perfect lighting. Let’s display our family images around our homes and not just on Facebook. Let’s work together to create a legacy for our children to enjoy for years to come!

Think of professional photography as custom artwork for your home!

Custom photography is certainly an investment for clients. It is also an investment for the photographer, including time invested in planning, consultations, set-up, the actual photo session, editing, proofing, ordering, and ensuring everything is perfect for you. As a professional photographer, I maintain top-of-the-line equipment and collaborate with the highest quality printing services to create stunning photography and prints for you.

Professional Child Photography
…being in demand, being well known for quality work, having a good reputation often costs time on the photographer’s part (years of practice, study, experience, etc).  A photographer’s expertise comes at a cost, their time learning their craft and learning the intricacies of lighting and the commitment put forth on their end to create a persona about their business that oozes professionalism.

When you hire a photographer of sound reputation, you are hiring an expert, one that knows that they must always reinvest in their business to create the reputation of being top notch.

Jenika’s Lens
A professional photographer has spent exhaustive amounts of time and money developing expertise that directly benefits YOU.

Some things can only be learned by working with scores of adults and children and shooting tens of thousands of photographs. When they don’t have active clients, they invent their own projects and keep practicing their craft. The more shoots a photographer has under their belt, the more able they are to “see” the best images and set about creating them. They can quickly recognize flattering light and use their camera to make it sing.

They know how to set people at ease, especially those who don’t like having their picture taken. They see your best qualities and bring them out. It’s their job to think about how you look, so that all you have to do is think about how much you love the people you’re with.

Each family I photograph is unique! They have different lifestyles, different photo preferences, and plan to use their images for different purposes. This is why I meet with each of my clients for a consultation before their photo session. The consultation provides me with an opportunity to ask questions, get to know their goals for the photo session, and begin planning the perfect session together. This is also an opportunity to preview my products and discuss where and how to display their artwork. I keep all of these considerations in mind during the session and while taking the photographs.

I have two different session fees for families (these apply to immediate family members only). Weekday sessions (Mon-Fri) are $125 and weekends (Sat-Sun) are $150, plus tax. Wall portraits and prints are purchased after the session at the Premiere. Clients typically spend between $800-$1200 for their artwork.

Approximately 2-3 weeks after the session, I will have you and your family come to my studio for your Premiere. This is your very own red-carpet event (gowns and tuxes optional) where you’ll enjoy treats while watching a slideshow of your stunning images. From there, we work together through the process of ordering the products that work best for your family. Choosing images and ordering prints can feel like an overwhelming process, but I am here to support you each step of the way!

Some of my collections include digital files with a print release, which allows you to print for personal use. Along with these digital files I also provide a document with tips for printing and some recommended photo printing labs. Contact me to find out more! janna.salmela@gmail.com

Family sessions are typically one hour but I don’t put a firm time limit on them. My goal is to capture the beauty and uniqueness of your family, regardless of how long (or little) it takes! Newborn needs a quick “nosh?” We can take the time to accommodate that! Toddler about to meltdown? We can hustle through their shots to ensure we capture some great moments before we miss the opportunity. I only schedule one family session per day so we have flexibility in the duration of the session.

I want you and your family to truly enjoy our time together without feeling rushed. The difference in facial expressions between the beginning and end of the session is remarkable! I find that when people have time to settle into the session and get used to me and my camera, we’re able to get those genuine smiles and natural family interactions we’re after.

Once in a blue moon. When I do, they are set up in a predetermined location and are 20 minutes each. Follow me on social media so you won’t miss out! Spots fill up quickly so be sure to sign-up as quickly as possible.

This is my most frequently asked question, so I’ve put together a blog post that you can find HERE. You can also check out my post entitled, “Preparing for Your Session” for all the ins and outs of creating an ideal photo session.

Of course! However, I also like to ask questions about activities you enjoy as a family, local places you like to visit, and the style of the room(s) your photos will be displayed in. It’s important that the style and colors of your photos coordinate with the decor of your home. If you prefer an indoor location, my studio is always a great option for your family session.

A light retouching is included for preliminary proofs. A full edit is done on all photographs ordered.

There is no travel fee if your location is within ten miles of Grand Rapids, MN. We will work out a travel fee for destinations outside ten miles. I’m always up for new locations – contact me if you'd like to discuss!

I accept all major credit cards, cash, or check. I also offer payment plans, as I want to make my photography attainable for everyone. Feel free to call or email me with any questions. (218) 259-2765 or janna.salmela@gmail.com
